Published standards, manufacturer instructions, historical records and workshop judgement have different purposes. We try not to make one stand in for another.
About the journal
We want owners to feel better equipped to ask careful questions—not pressured to make an old watch look new.
Pavilionvaultbamboo is an independent editorial website about preserving mechanical watches. We write for collectors, inheritors and everyday owners who want to understand what a proposed intervention might protect, change or erase.
A watch can be valuable for its engineering, an association with a person, a distinctive design or the simple fact that somebody wore it for years. We do not assume that market value should decide every conservation question.
Our four field guides follow a practical sequence: establish condition, consider movement work, decide on surfaces, then carry the record forward. They are reading companions for a professional discussion, not instructions for undertaking specialist repairs.

Published standards, manufacturer instructions, historical records and workshop judgement have different purposes. We try not to make one stand in for another.
A photograph is not a diagnosis. A serial number is not complete authentication. A timing result needs its conditions. Our language should reflect those limits.
We describe irreversible choices plainly so owners can agree on boundaries before polishing, replacement or refinishing begins.
Our guides link to horological training organisations, conservation bodies, standards organisations, public collections and manufacturer resources where relevant. A reference indicates a place to investigate a subject; it does not imply that an organisation has reviewed or endorsed our interpretation.
Technical instructions and service policies can change. Consult the current source and a qualified practitioner for the particular watch. Where a manufacturer describes a modern product, do not assume its instructions fit an older watch with a similar name.
If you identify an error, please send the page address, the disputed passage and a source that explains the correction. We welcome precise, courteous challenges. We do not provide individual valuations, authenticate watches or recommend repair work from submitted descriptions.
We are not affiliated with watch manufacturers and do not operate a restoration studio. Brand names are used for identification and reference. Nothing on the site offers a repair, booking or certification service.
